A few weeks ago, we were in the Himalayas and had an idea for one of the cleanest Any Card At Any Number effects we’ve seen.

We pictured it looking like this:

You start a timer on your phone and tell the spectator that they’re going to choose a card before the timer hits zero. You ask them questions like ‘red or black’ and ‘hearts or diamonds’, and eventually they come to a single card. As soon as they have their card, you stop the timer on your phone—let’s say there’s 32 seconds left on it.

You explain that it’s impossible to predict how long it will take someone to choose a playing card, and there was no way either of you could have known they would stop with exactly 32 seconds left on the clock.

“How crazy would it be?” you ask, “if the 32nd card in this deck is the card you named?”

You proceed to pick up a deck (or better, have the spectator pick up the deck) and count to the 32nd card, finding their card.

As we climbed the mountains, we gradually were able to piece together a method for this effect that allows it to look exactly like what we’ve described above.

Here are the conditions for the trick:

* No forces
* Normal deck—no gimmicks
* Spectator can deal
* You never touch or adjust the cards
* Easy to do—no sleight of hand required
* Although it uses a stack, it can be done without memorizing the stack
* Uses an iPhone timer (the trick is specific to the iPhone timer features) - so you’ll need to own an iPhone. (Sorry Android users.)
